AI Search Statistics 2026: The Numbers That Matter

By GraphoRank Editorial · · 17 min read

AI assistants are mainstream: 49% of US adults used a chatbot in February 2026 (Pew). Whether they cost websites clicks is still argued. Pew found link clicks on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% to 58% drop in top-result CTR. The studies differ in method, time window and market, so this page sets them side by side.

Last updated: 10 October 2026. We recheck this page regularly and add new studies as they come out.

Key takeaways

  • Usage is large and growing, but each survey asks a different question, so the headline numbers are not interchangeable.
  • Every study found fewer clicks when an AI answer appears. How many fewer depends on the method, the window and the market.
  • AI answers do not cite reliably. The Stanford and Tow Center tests measure different things and should not be merged into one trend.
  • AI crawlers are a small slice of HTML requests on Cloudflare’s network, and whether they obey robots.txt depends on the bot and the task.
  • No study we found shows that llms.txt helps visibility in AI answers.
  • No analyst-grade market size for GEO tools is public. The hard numbers come from public companies.

What are the headline numbers?

  • 49% of US adults used AI chatbots in February 2026 Pew Research Center
  • 950 million monthly active users for the Gemini app, and 1 billion for Google AI Mode, in Q2 2026 Alphabet, company-reported
  • 8% vs 15% share of Google visits with a link click, with and without an AI summary Pew, US, March 2025
  • 58% lower position-1 click-through rate (CTR) when an AI Overview shows; the 2025 version of the study found 34.5% Ahrefs, December 2025 comparison
  • 10% of people across 48 markets use AI chatbots for news every week, up from 7% Reuters Institute, 2026
  • 51.5% of sentences in AI search answers were fully supported by their citations Stanford, 2023 engines
  • 4.2% of HTML requests on Cloudflare’s network came from AI bots in 2025, against 4.5% for Googlebot Cloudflare, 2025
  • 2.1% to 28% share of sites with an llms.txt file, depending on who is counted four studies, see the llms.txt section
  • 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026 Ahrefs, 137,210 domains
  • $38 million in AI-products annual recurring revenue at Semrush at the end of 2025, up from $4 million company results

How to read this page

Each statistic gives the figure, who measured it, when, in which market or sample, and the method in a few words. Every figure traces back to a source in the list on this page. Numbers from different studies can’t be compared unless the method matches. Where studies disagree, we show them together and say why.

Key terms used below:

  • Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content easy for AI answer engines to find, read and cite. See the GEO guide.
  • AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google shows above regular search results. AI Mode is Google’s separate chat-style search experience.
  • Click-through rate (CTR) is the share of people who see a result and click it.
  • Zero-click means the searcher gets an answer and does not visit any site.
  • Crawler is an automated program that fetches web pages. AI crawlers fetch pages to train models, to build a search index, or to answer a user’s request in real time.
  • llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file at a site’s root that lists key pages for AI systems. See the llms.txt guide.
  • 49% of US adults use AI chatbots Pew Research Center, 17-23 February 2026
  • 34% of US adults had ever used ChatGPT Pew, 24 February-2 March 2025
  • 950 million monthly active users for the Gemini app; Google AI Mode passed 1 billion Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings remarks, 22 July 2026, company-reported
  • 10% use AI chatbots for news weekly Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026, 48 markets
  • 76% to 53% ChatGPT’s share of generative-AI web visits, June 2025 to May 2026 Similarweb, worldwide traffic panel
  • 2% / 7% / 75% of US adults get news from chatbots often / sometimes / never Pew, 18-24 August 2025

The detail behind each number:

  • Pew, 49%. Survey of US adults. It was 33% in 2024, but the 2024 question was asked only of people who had heard of chatbots, so the bases differ.
  • Pew, 34% ever used ChatGPT. Pew, 24 February-2 March 2025, 5,123 US adults, online and phone panel. That was roughly double the 2023 share; 58% of under-30s had used it.
  • Similarweb. ChatGPT’s share fell from about 76% to about 53%. Over the same period Gemini rose from under 9% to about 27-28% and Claude from about 2% to about 9%. Endpoints are rounded and measure visits to AI sites, not referrals to publishers.
  • Reuters Institute. About 2,000 respondents per market (97,520 in total). It was 7% in 2025; 16% among under-35s; the UK is at 4%. The report finds no rise in the US, UK, France or Germany.
  • Pew, news from chatbots. Pew, 18-24 August 2025, 5,153 US adults: 2% often, 7% sometimes, 75% never.

Why the numbers differ. Pew’s 49% asks whether Americans use chatbots at all. Reuters’ 10% asks how many people across 48 markets use them weekly for news. Different question, different market, different window. Alphabet’s user counts are monthly active users reported by the company; they cannot be compared with weekly or survey-based figures.

2. Do AI answers cost websites clicks?

Every study points the same way. The size of the drop does not.

  • 8% vs 15% of visits with a link click, with and without a Google AI summary Pew, March 2025; 900 US adults
  • 34.5% lower position-1 CTR with an AI Overview Ahrefs, March 2024 versus March 2025
  • 58% lower position-1 CTR than forecast with an AI Overview Ahrefs 2026 update, December 2023 versus December 2025
  • 0.52% / 0.70% / 1.45% organic CTR with an AI Overview not citing the site / citing the site / no AI Overview Seer Interactive, Q3 2025
  • 24.61% peak share of keywords with AI Overviews, July 2025 Semrush, 10 million+ keywords
  • 42% of chatbot-news users say they always or often click through to sources Reuters Institute 2026, self-reported

The four click studies side by side:

Study Measure Window and sample Result
Pew Link clicks on visits March 2025; browsing data from 900 US adults, 68,879 Google searches, 12,593 with an AI summary 8% with an AI summary, 15% without
Ahrefs (2025) Position-1 CTR March 2024 versus March 2025, 300,000 keywords (150,000 with an AI Overview, 150,000 informational keywords without); Google Search Console data, desktop 34.5% lower with an AI Overview
Ahrefs (2026 update) Position-1 CTR against a forecast December 2023 versus December 2025; same 300,000-keyword design About 58% lower: 0.016 actual against about 0.037 expected
Seer Interactive Organic CTR, Q3 2025 3,119 informational queries across 42 client organisations, 25.1 million organic impressions (the sample runs June 2024 to September 2025); Google Search Console 0.52% (-65.2% year on year) with an AI Overview that did not cite the site; 0.70% (-49.4%) when it cited the site; 1.45% (-46.2%) with no AI Overview

More detail:

  • Pew. About 1% of visits clicked a link inside the summary. The browsing session ended on 26% of visits with a summary, against 16% without.
  • Ahrefs 2026. Positions 2-10 were down 19.4% to 50.8%. The control group without an AI Overview also fell about 49% (0.076 to 0.039).
  • Seer. Brands cited in the AI Overview had an organic CTR about 35% higher than those not cited (0.70% against 0.52%); the author says this shows correlation, not that citation causes it.
  • Semrush. AI Overviews appeared on 6.49% of keywords in January 2025, peaked at 24.61% in July and stood at 15.69% in November 2025 (10 million+ keywords, January-November 2025).
  • Reuters Institute. Executive summary, self-reported, standalone chatbots such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. The figure is 44% for search and 36% for social media, from quite different user bases.

Why the click numbers differ. Pew counts what a panel of people did on one month of visits. Ahrefs and Seer count CTR from Search Console data across many queries, and Ahrefs compares against a forecast built from a control group. The two Ahrefs figures differ in window (the 2026 study spans two years, the 2025 one a single year) and in how the baseline is built; Ahrefs says the control group’s decline is a broader trend. Seer splits by whether the site was cited.

The size of the drop depends on the method, window and market. CTR in the no-AI control groups also fell, so not every lost click is down to AI answers. Google’s own statement that total organic click volume has been “relatively stable” is listed in the unverified box below because it publishes no numbers.

3. How reliably do AI engines cite sources?

  • 51.5% of generated sentences fully supported by their citations Stanford, 2023 (EMNLP 2023 Findings)
  • 74.5% of citations supported the sentence they were attached to Stanford, 2023 (EMNLP 2023 Findings)
  • 60%+ of queries answered incorrectly when asked to identify a news article’s source Tow Center, February 2025
  • 37% wrong for Perplexity, Grok-3 94% Tow Center, February 2025
  • Up to 40% visibility gain from GEO methods Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024

Why the accuracy numbers differ. The Stanford study judges whether each sentence is backed by its citation. The Tow Center test asks whether a chatbot can name the source of a quote. The tasks differ, the engines differ and the tests sit two years apart, so don’t join them into one trend line. For what to do about it, see the AI SEO guide.

The method behind each study:

  • Stanford researchers, 2023. Human evaluation of Bing Chat, NeevaAI, Perplexity and YouChat. These are 2023 engines.
  • Tow Center test. Tow Center for Digital Journalism, February 2025, 8 AI search tools, 1,600 queries (200 article excerpts from 20 publishers, each tested on 8 tools). Perplexity was wrong 37% of the time, Grok-3 94%. Each excerpt was queried once, and the task is source identification, not answer quality.
  • Page-quality pillars and citation. Kumar and Palkhouski preprint, September 2025, 1,702 citations and 1,100 unique URLs audited from 70 product-intent prompts across Brave Summary, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. The pillars for metadata and freshness, semantic HTML and structured data showed the strongest associations with being cited. Observational association, not proof of cause; English-language B2B SaaS pages only.
  • Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024 (arXiv, revised June 2024). GEO methods raised visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%. GEO-bench black-box experiments on 2023-era engines. Effect varies by domain.
  • Chen et al. preprint, September 2025. AI search shows a strong bias towards earned media (third-party coverage) over brand-owned and social content, unlike Google’s more balanced mix. Controlled experiments across verticals, languages and paraphrases. The abstract reports no numeric effect.

4. How much traffic do AI crawlers and agents generate?

  • 4.2% of HTML requests came from AI bots in 2025 Cloudflare Radar Year in Review, 1 January-2 December 2025
  • 4.5% of HTML requests came from Googlebot Cloudflare Radar Year in Review, 1 January-2 December 2025
  • 4.5% of sites name GPTBot in robots.txt (desktop; 4.2% mobile), up from 2.9% in 2024 HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025
  • 78% of sites have a robots.txt file Cloudflare, April 2026, Agent Readiness scan dataset
  • 4% declare AI usage preferences Cloudflare, April 2026, Agent Readiness scan dataset
  • 3.9% pass markdown content negotiation Cloudflare, April 2026, Agent Readiness scan dataset

Crawl-to-referral ratio is pages crawled by the platform divided by the visits it referred back (Cloudflare Radar, January-July 2025, Cloudflare network). In July 2025:

Platform Crawl-to-referral ratio, July 2025
Anthropic 38,065.7 to 1
OpenAI 1,091.4 to 1
Perplexity 194.8 to 1
Google 5.4 to 1

More detail:

  • Cloudflare Year in Review. The AI share ranged from 2.4% in early April to 6.4% in late June. Peak crawl-to-refer ratios: Anthropic up to 500,000 to 1, OpenAI 3,700 to 1 (March), Perplexity below 200 to 1 since September, Google about 3 to 1.
  • Web Almanac. ClaudeBot is named by 3.6%, Google-Extended by 3.4%, PerplexityBot by 2.8%. This counts sites that mention the bot, not sites that block it.
  • Kim et al. preprint, 2025. Compliance with robots.txt is uneven: 130 self-declared bots over 40 days, plus controlled experiments. Bots comply less with stricter directives, and AI search crawlers rarely check robots.txt at all. Single-institution logs.

An allegation, not a finding. Cloudflare, August 2025, observations across tens of thousands of domains plus test domains: declared Perplexity crawlers made 20-25 million requests a day; an undeclared crawler impersonating Chrome made 3-6 million. This is an allegation by a vendor with a commercial interest.

Default computer-use agents succeeded on 78.3% of tasks; in keyboard-only mode, 41.67% (Mohanbabu et al., February 2026 (CHI ’26); 60 tasks and 158,325 interaction events from blind, low-vision and sighted users). This is desktop interface work, not web citation, but, in our reading, it suggests agents are sensitive to how an interface can be operated. See agentic navigability.

Do AI crawlers respect robots.txt?

Vendor documentation separates three kinds of bot, and the rules differ:

Vendor Bots listed robots.txt, per the vendor
OpenAI GPTBot (training), OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), ChatGPT-User (user-initiated) Rules may not apply to ChatGPT-User
Anthropic ClaudeBot, Claude-User, Claude-SearchBot Its bots respect robots.txt
Perplexity PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User Perplexity-User generally ignores it, because a user triggers the fetch

In our reading, because a crawl-to-referral ratio mixes training and retrieval crawling, a high ratio doesn’t show that a bot only takes.

5. How many sites publish llms.txt, and does it work?

llms.txt is a proposed convention. Four studies measured adoption and reached four numbers:

Measured by Share with llms.txt Population and date
HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025 2.13% desktop, 2.10% mobile Crawl of sites; exact month not visible
SE Ranking 10.13% Nearly 300,000 domains, published November 2025
Common Crawl 11.72% of sampled URLs returned a text file 4,895,688 attempted /llms.txt URLs, July 2026 crawl
Ahrefs 28% (about 38,000 of 137,210) Domains with traffic in Ahrefs Web Analytics, May 2026

Why the numbers differ. The populations differ. Common Crawl sampled random URLs on crawlable hosts and its authors say the result is not directly comparable to the Web Almanac’s. Ahrefs says its customers skew technical, so 28% is likely an upper bound. In Common Crawl’s data 22.32% of attempted URLs returned HTTP 200, but only 52.5% of those carried a text body, which yields the 11.72%.

What the studies say about effect:

  • No correlation with AI citations. SE Ranking, nearly 300,000 domains, Spearman correlation, XGBoost and SHAP; the model without the llms.txt variable predicted citations better. Correlational study by a vendor.
  • 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026. Ahrefs, 137,210 domains. Of roughly 22,000 requests, 96% came from bots; GPTBot was the largest single AI source at 4.51%. A fetch is not proof of use.
  • Google says llms.txt “will neither harm nor help” visibility in Google Search. Google Search Central, “Optimizing your website for generative AI features”, updated 10 July 2026. This applies to Google Search only.

6. How big is the GEO and AEO tools market?

No Gartner, Forrester or IDC market size for GEO tools was publicly accessible when this page was compiled. The hard numbers come from public companies and official announcements.

  • $443.6 million Semrush FY2025 revenue, up 18% Semrush results release, Q4 and full year 2025
  • $38 million Semrush AI-products ARR at 31 December 2025, against $4 million a year earlier Semrush results release, Q4 and full year 2025
  • $1.9 billion equity value of Adobe’s Semrush deal, $12.00 a share in cash; closed 28 April 2026 Semrush newsroom, announced 19 November 2025
  • $282.6 million Similarweb FY2025 revenue, up 13%; FY2026 guidance $305-315 million Similarweb 6-K, Q4 and FY2025
  • 82% of surveyed professionals have implemented answer engine optimization (AEO) to some degree Minuttia with Growth Memo, June 2026; 599 respondents
  • 26.9% call AEO a core part of SEO; almost 40% have no dedicated AEO budget Minuttia with Growth Memo, June 2026; 599 respondents
  • ARR means annual recurring revenue.
  • Derived, not stated by Adobe: the price is about 4.3 times Semrush’s FY2025 revenue (1.9 billion divided by 443.6 million). This is our arithmetic.
  • Similarweb. The release states no AI revenue figure.
  • Minuttia survey. Minuttia is an AEO and content services vendor. Online survey of 599 SEO, content and growth professionals, descriptive and directional. The sample skews to people who read an SEO newsletter, so adoption is probably overstated for small businesses generally.
  • Three marketing-suite vendors bought AI-visibility companies in about twelve months: Adobe (Semrush), HubSpot (XFunnel, announced 31 October 2025) and Sitecore (Scrunch, announced 3 June 2026). Sitecore and HubSpot did not disclose prices.

Our reading (interpretation, not a finding): Semrush grew 18% overall while its AI line went from $4 million to $38 million ARR, and marketing-suite vendors appear to be buying into the category.

Reported but not independently verified

Not measurements. These figures come from grade C sources: press releases with no method, secondary coverage, forecasts, or pages we could not open.

  • Gartner forecast (February 2024): traditional search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026. A prediction, not a measurement; the page was not readable during our check.
  • Google (Liz Reid, August 2025): total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been “relatively stable year over year”. Internal data, no numbers, period or method published, and it measures total volume rather than per-query CTR.
  • OpenAI via TechCrunch (February 2026): about 900 million weekly ChatGPT users and 50 million paying subscribers. Company-reported, “weekly user” not defined; we read TechCrunch’s report (27 February 2026), not OpenAI’s own post.
  • Market-size forecasts: MarketsandMarkets projects GEO platforms, tools and services from $390 million in 2025 to $4,250 million by 2032. Definitions across publishers differ widely, so no single figure should be quoted without naming the publisher and scope.
  • Funding rounds: Profound $96 million Series C at a $1 billion valuation (reported early 2026), Peec AI $21 million Series A (November 2025). Amounts come from trade press rather than company filings.
  • Deal prices: Sitecore-Scrunch reported at $225 million (Bloomberg, relayed by B&T). XFunnel reported at $30 million by one outlet. Neither acquirer disclosed a price.
  • Reuters Institute 2025 report: weekly generative AI use reported rising from 18% to 34% across six countries. We could not open the report page, so the figure is unconfirmed.

How we compiled this page

This page draws only on a research corpus compiled on 10 October 2026. It uses primary sources: peer-reviewed papers, preprints, official first-party documentation and data, regulatory filings, and industry studies that publish their method and sample. We opened each source and copied each figure from the page itself.

Grade Source type Where it appears
A Peer-reviewed paper, or official first-party data or documentation with method Main sections
B Industry study with published methodology and sample, or a preprint Main sections
C Secondary coverage or unclear method Only in the unverified box above

We don’t invent, extrapolate or combine figures into new statistics. The one derived number, the Adobe multiple, is labelled as derived. Where studies conflict, we show both. Vendor studies (Ahrefs, Semrush, Seer, SE Ranking, Similarweb) are marked by author and may reflect their customer base. The “Last updated” line shows when we last checked the page.

FAQ

How many people use ChatGPT and other AI chatbots?

In the US, 49% of adults used AI chatbots in February 2026, up from 33% in 2024 (Pew Research Center; the 2024 base differed). Pew also found 34% of US adults had ever used ChatGPT in early 2025. OpenAI's own user counts are company-reported and appear only in the unverified box. Alphabet reported 950 million monthly active users for the Gemini app in Q2 2026.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

Every study found lower click rates when an AI answer appears, but the size varies. Pew measured link clicks on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without (US, March 2025). Ahrefs found position-1 click-through rate (CTR) 34.5% lower in 2025 and about 58% lower in a 2026 update. Seer Interactive found organic CTR down 49.4% to 65.2% year on year in Q3 2025.

How often do AI answers cite sources correctly?

Not reliably. A 2023 Stanford study found 51.5% of generated sentences were fully supported by their citations. In February 2025 the Tow Center found chatbots gave incorrect answers to more than 60% of queries asking them to identify a news article's source. These measure different tasks and should not be combined into one trend.

How much web traffic comes from AI crawlers?

Cloudflare measured AI bots at 4.2% of HTML requests across its network between 1 January and 2 December 2025, against 4.5% for Googlebot. Cloudflare's customer base is not the whole web, so treat it as a network-level figure.

How many websites have an llms.txt file?

Between 2.1% and 28%, depending on who is counted. The HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025 found 2.10% of mobile sites, SE Ranking 10.13% of nearly 300,000 domains, Common Crawl 11.72% of sampled URLs in July 2026, and Ahrefs 28% of 137,210 domains in May 2026 (a technical customer base).

Does llms.txt help visibility in AI answers?

None of the studies we found measured a benefit. SE Ranking found no correlation with AI citations across nearly 300,000 domains. Ahrefs found 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026. Google's documentation says llms.txt will neither harm nor help visibility in Google Search.

Do AI crawlers respect robots.txt?

It depends on the bot and the task. Anthropic says its bots respect robots.txt. Perplexity's documentation says Perplexity-User generally ignores it because the fetch is user-triggered. An academic study of 130 self-declared bots found AI search crawlers rarely check robots.txt at all. Cloudflare alleged in 2025 that Perplexity also used undeclared crawlers.

How big is the GEO and AEO tools market?

No analyst-grade market size is publicly available. Hard numbers come from public companies: Semrush reported FY2025 revenue of $443.6M and AI-products annual recurring revenue (ARR) above $38M, up from $4M a year earlier. Adobe agreed to acquire Semrush for about $1.9B in equity value, closed 28 April 2026.
